After a few years of complete protection, Slovakia will probably return to shooting wolves. A working group at the Ministry of Agriculture recommended culling 60 wolves per year.
Year-round protection of the predatory wolf was introduced by the Ministry of the Environment under Ján Budaj in 2021. At the moment, the wolf is protected and killing it is a crime.
Following the recommendation of the group at the Ministry of Agriculture, the Minister of the Environment Tomáš Taraba (for the SNS) can now change this by decree. He has already indicated that he will do so when he officially receives the working group's statement.
