‚Windfall tax on banks doesn’t help economy‘

Wrangling over the government budget for next year is continuing.

Prime minister Robert Fico has confirmed he wants a one-off windfall profit tax on the banks next year, to generate extra income for the state. Michal Simecka, leader of the largest opposition party, said this would not help the economy. Banks would pass on the cost to customers in the form of higher fees or interest rates,  he said.

The Labour Minister Erik Tomas said there is no money left to pay a so-called 13th pension this year, but he would try to find funds for a oneoff payment.
