In the first week in office, the new Interior Minister approved the suspension of six police officers who were investigating corruption cases in the police itself and in the Domestic Security Service. The opposition immediately claimed this was politically motivated, to protect people who are close to the government parties, Smer and Hlas. The Interior Minister, Matus Sutaj Estok, said the six officers were suspected of breaking the law. Now, the SME newspaper reports there are dozens of police officers who are accused of something or other, who are still in their jobs. In response to a question from the newspaper, the Ministry of the Interior said there are currently 71 police officers under investigation, and still at work.
