On Friday, the UN General Assembly passed a non-binding resolution calling for instant "humanitarian ceasefire" in the Gaza Strip. New Foreign Affairs Minister Juraj Blanar stated that several important items were lacking in the UN resolution. That is why Slovakia ultimately abstained from the vote on Friday at the UN General Assembly.
"We find it necessary to condemn emphatically the terrorist attacks mounted by Hamas and underline the right of countries to defence in accordance with the international humanitarian law as well as the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. It is with regret that I must state that these important items have been lacking in the approved text of the resolution," explained Blanar. As he further added, Slovakia joined the call for the provision of prompt, safe and continuous humanitarian aid that will contribute towards the de-escalation of tension."
