Survey: Women fear streets in late hours

Almost every woman in Slovakia (85 percent) is afraid to be out in the streets alone in late hours, regardless of age or location. This is the outcome of a survey conducted by NMS Market Research agency.

Almost 33 percent of women experience great fear and more than half mild fear. This fear affects many women regardless of their age or region where they live. In order to protect themselves, more than half of women choose not to stay outdoors in late hours (48 percent) or don't walk out at night alone (51 percent).

"Younger women in the age category below 26 in particular often protect themselves by being on the phone in a conversation with someone, carry items of self-defence with them and increasingly share their GPS location with their partner or family," said Denisa Lakatosova of NMS.

The survey also revealed that nine out of ten young Slovak women have found themselves in an uncomfortable situation with men.

In addition, 59 percent of women don't trust that police can protect them from violent sexual criminals and 57 percent of men don't trust that police can protect women.

The online survey was conducted in September 21-24, 2023, on a sample of 1,000 respondents.
