Prime minister Fico also told the European Commission President that his government is preparing changes to the Penal Code. He said that while in opposition, members of his party were unfairly investigated and prosecuted. He called these "blatant violations of human rights and misuse of criminal law.” His Defense Minister Robert Kalinak was charged earlier this year with founding and supporting a criminal group and detained for three weeks. The Justice Department offered its apologies to Kalinak this week.
Fico told Ursula van der Leyen that her European Commission should have spoken out against this misuse of the criminal law.
