New PM: No sanctions on Russia if detrimental to Slovakia

On his first day in office, Prime Minister Robert Fico is in Brussels to attend the two-day summit of government leaders. Before he left he met with the parliamentary commission on foreign affairs, where he said that he will not vote for any sanctions against Russia unless an analysis of the impact on Slovakia is on the table. "If the sanctions are to be such that they will harm us, then I see no reason to support,“ he said.

In the same meeting, Fico also said the government is ready to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine, but no military aid. Comprehensive aid does not include the supply of weapons. "As Prime Minister, I will support zero military aid to Ukraine," he said.
On Wednesday, after being formally appointed by the President, Mr. Fico had said in his inaugural speech  that his  government would  pursue a sovereign foreign policy.
