Justice Ministry apologizes to ex-Interior Minister, prosecutor disagrees

The Justice Ministry has apologised to the former three-time interior minister, Robert Kaliňák of the Smer party. It said he should not have been prosecuted and imprisoned for three weeks. Kalinak is also about to be confirmed this week as Defence Minister in the next government.
The special prosecutor of the Justice Department, who led the investigation of Kalinak, disagrees.

On Facebook, he wrote: “Two court instances - the Specialized Criminal Court and the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic – agreed there were grounds for his criminal prosecution, including the legal qualification of the crime of founding, organizing and supporting a criminal group. Respect for valid decisions of the judiciary is a necessary prerequisite for the functioning of the rule of law.”

He added that the investigation had not been stopped and that criminal proceedings were ongoing.
