Last year, the Slovak Republic had a deficit of 2.22 billion euros, which represented 2% of the gross domestic product (GDP). Government debt came out at about 58 per cent of GDP. Both numbers represent a stark improvement over the year before, when governments had to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Slovakia is now almost exactly in the middle of EU member states where it concerns government debt. As a percentage of the economy, Slovakia’s government debt is smaller than that of France, Austria and even Germany.
