Bratislava mayor says city desperately needs cash

The mayor of Bratislava says that the capital desperately needs cash from the central government. Along with Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, Bratislava is the poorest capital of the European Union, he said in an interview with the Slovak Spectator newspaper. This year, the city will receive 35 million euro less from the central government; in recent years, the city ‘lost’ 50 million in funding, he said. The money is needed to develop public transport and cycle paths, among other things. Otherwise, cars will choke the city. Look at Vienna, said the mayor: fewer cars are registered there every year. The reason, he said, is simple: Public transport is high-quality and there is a good network of cycling paths.
