Almost one-third of Ukraine's territory is contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance, and Slovakia is prepared to lend a helping hand and participate in humanitarian mine clearing, Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Wlachovsky declared at an international donor conference on humanitarian demining of Ukraine on Wednesday.
According to the minister Ukraine is currently the most mined country in the world with a contaminated area of more than 170,000 kilomerters squared. This poses a great danger to the safety and security of inhabitants, prevents the displaced from returning home and causes enormous economic losses. Slovakia will provide Ukraine with €750,000 for the procurement of Slovak-manufactured mine-clearing systems, training of Ukrainian personnel and other equipment.
