Ministers agree another weapons amnesty

The Interior Ministry has received Cabinet’s approval on Wednesday for another amnesty on unregistered weapons that should come into effect from December. The Cabinet has approved the draft amendment to the Law on Firearms and Ammunition, which enables this amnesty.

“Even if a single weapon is surrendered, this legislative plan will make sense,” said Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák when the draft bill was submitted for interdepartmental review some time ago. This would already be the third gun amnesty and it should last for half a year. During the first two weapons amnesties people in Slovakia surrender almost eight thousand unregistered weapons. ”We feel that we could round up that number to ten thousand and withdraw several hundred weapons from the illegal market,” said Kaliňák.
