The earthquake that struck eastern Slovakia on Monday evening (9 October) is believed to be the strongest in the country's history in the last 80 years. The European Seismological Centre said it measured five in magnitude. The quake was felt in the Presov and Kosice regions. The epicentre was about 20 kilometres north-west of the town of Humenne. Three villages in the districts of Vranov nad Toplou and Stropkov declared a state of emergency due to damage to houses. The earthquake damaged power lines and distribution systems, ruptured gas and water connections to homes, and damaged apartments. Power cuts were also reported in the area. The extent of the damage is not yet known. The two nuclear power plants in Slovakia are in good condition and operating normally.
