EU is united in efforts to tackle migration on external borders

At an informal meeting of European leaders at an EU summit in Granada, Spain, the European Union member countries agreed on the need for more intensively address migration at the external borders of the union, Slovak Prime Minister Ludovit Odor told journalists, adding that however, they didn't agree on what to do with migrants inside the EU, on which especially Poland and Hungary have a different view.

According to the Premier, all countries agreed that the European Commission (EC) should allocate more money to address migration and hold more intense talks with third countries.

"If Europe isn't able to defend its external borders, it doesn't sound credible in other areas either. We need to work more with the countries through which migrants come," stressed the Slovak Prime Minister. According to him, a good compromise is emerging in this relation, which can bring solutions as early as next year. The country's leaders also agreed on the need to "declare war on human traffickers" and their networks.

However, Poland and Hungary categorically rejected the relocation of migrants within the EU. In response to the disagreements regarding the reform of the migration policy, Odor pointed out that "if we aren't willing to find a pan-European solution, then it'll catch up with us and the only solution will be that Schengen won't work, or many countries will be excluded from it and we'll lose the great advantage that at the moment we can travel all over Europe without any checks".

Odor and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki talked about the checks that Poland has introduced on the border with Slovakia. Odor emphasized that the measure will last only ten days for now. In his opinion, considering the situation, it may happen that Poland won't continue in this mode.
