Ukraine suspends complaint with WTO against Hungary, Poland and Slovakia

Ukraine has suspended the complaint that it lodged with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) against three of its neighbours - Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. The complaint involved refusing to end the ban on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products. TASR reported the news based on a story by PAP agency.

The European Commission announced on September 15 that the embargo on four categories of Ukrainian agricultural products would expire as planned at the end of the day. After analysing data related to the impacts of exports of these agricultural commodities from Ukraine on the EU market, it concluded that the market distortions in the five member states neighbouring Ukraine had been eliminated.

Poland, Hungary and Slovakia decided to continue their embargos on imports of Ukrainian wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds despite the Commission's disagreement, pointing to concerns that a glut of imports from their eastern neighbour could damage their farming sectors. Ukraine responded by filing the complaint with the WTO.
