The caretaker Government will unveil dozens of measures to cut down the public deficit, but it will do so only after the September 30 parliamentary election, Prime Minister Ludovit Odor declared on RTVS's discussion programme 'Five Minutes to Twelve' on Sunday.
"If we unveiled the measures, which might be painful although rational and necessary, during this hateful election campaign, I'm not sure about the outcome. Hence, I'm intensively considering unveiling them only after the election," said Odor.
According to the Premier, it would be ideal to consolidate public finances at the level of 5 percent of GDP, but the minimal consolidation would have to equal 3 percent of GDP. "We're the caretaker Government, so we are at liberty of telling the truth and calling things the way they are. We expected that no political party would want to talk about the need to get ready for austerity cuts during the campaign. We've drawn attention to the fact that the situation is not good. Slovakia ranks among the worst in the EU, in terms of public deficit and sustainability," claimed Odor and added that previous governments lacked the effort to consolidate public finances in good times.
As for the illegal migrants, no incident has been detected thus far, confirmed the Prime Minister. "It still holds that the migrants who arrive, leave within 24 hours on average," he said and added that migrants are capable of crossing even guarded borders. "Any notion that it's possible to hermetically seal the border is nothing but a myth," stated Odor, pointing out that such a measure would not only be inefficient but extremely costly as well. (RTVS)
