Prime Minister disappointed with failed session on migrants

On Monday Parliament lacked a quorum and thus failed the second attempt to convene an extraordinary session on illegal migrants. Premier Ludovit Odor expressed his disappointment over the fact that Parliament had failed to discuss a government-sponsored bill that was supposed to make the current police obligation to grant a certificate of short-term residence to every foreigner found in Slovakia only optional. "Almost all political parties were saying that [migrants] come here because of these papers," the prime minister said. As he noted, the law in question could be amended swiftly so that the issuing of these certificates to foreigners would no longer be necessary, but only optional.
