Onion Soccer Ball to Set New Record

In an annual effort to set a new Slovak onion-related record, Madunice (Trnava region) created a gigantic soccer ball made of onion that weighs approximately a tonne. The onion ball, made at the two-day Onion Fest held over the past weekend, is 77 times bigger than the one used at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

There is no report on how many pairs of eyes cried during the process of its creation, but the effort proved certainly worthwhile, says Madunice mayor Alena Jelušová. "We try to set a new onion record every year while embracing some current theme. This year, we decided to follow up on the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and make a ball. It was a real drudgery. One only needs to realise that those thousands of onions had to be harvested first, peeled and then used to create a ball with a diameter of 1.8 metre," said Jelušová.
