Steps in connection with illegal migration need to be communicated and coordinated at the bilateral and regional levels, Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Wlachovsky and his Austrian counterpart Alexander Schallenberg concurred during a phone call on Thursday. "We're aware that no country can solve the problems associated with illegal migration alone. It's a regional problem, the solution of which requires joint action, compliance with the rules and a responsible approach by each country. However, a long-term and functional solution must be found at the European level, and this has precisely been an effort of our diplomacy for several years," stated the Slovak minister.
Wlachovsky informed his Austrian counterpart about specific measures approved by the Government, the aim of which is to limit illegal migration through Slovakia and fight trafficking. Wlachovsky also criticised Hungary's approach to joint efforts to manage migration flows, which is characterised by the non-registration of migrants or the impossibility of applying for asylum in the country. He pointed out that Hungary refuses to carry out the so-called readmission bilateral agreement with Slovakia on taking over illegal migrants, which is part of the current problem.
