Children's access to health care has been put in jeopardy by the failure to shorten the opening hours of outpatient emergency departments, according to the Slovak Doctor Chamber (SLK), which has petitioned Parliament to approve changes in the way the emergency departments operate.
"The government passed the shortening of opening hours a few days ago, but the ball is now in Parliament's court, which must greenlight the proposed changes, too. Lawmakers, however, are more busy with their election campaigning thus far, and doctors and health personnel are once again left hanging. The reality is that hundreds of paediatricians have already filed their notices with the emergency health services and dozens of others refuse to serve, even on threat of fines," reads the SLK statement.
