The Special Prosecutor's Office approaches every corruption case with due seriousness, spokesperson Jana Tökölyová said on Thursday in reaction to a Transparency International Slovakia (TIS) report suggesting that corruption in Slovakia takes place with virtual impunity.
TIS pointed out that as many as 48 percent of all cases dealt with by TIS involved bribes below €20, while bribes exceeding €100 made up only around 25 percent of all cases, and a mere 5 percent of the total number involved serious corruption involving public procurement, distribution of EU funds, and elections. In reaction, Tökölyová stated that the Penal Code doesn't state anything about “small or minor corruption”. Also, it isn't easy to provide evidence for bribes. If the offender isn't caught red handed, it's difficult to prove it later, noted Tökölyová.
