President Zuzana Caputova left for Germany on Wednesday morning where she will receive the Emperor Otto Prize. The prize is bestowed on figures and institutions for their extraordinary contributions to the European integration process, especially with regards to the states of central, eastern and south-eastern Europe.
"The Slovak President will be awarded for her pro-European orientation and determination to promote the rule of law, peace and freedom," announced the City of Magdeburg in connection with the prize, which is named after the Duke of Saxony and first Holy Roman Emperor and German King Otto I the Great. The ceremony will take place in Magdeburg Cathedral.
Before the ceremony, the President will hold plenary talks with representatives of the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, and the Slovak head of state is also scheduled to meet compatriots. Economy Minister Peter Dovhun and Education Minister Daniel Butora will take part in the talks as well.
The Emperor Otto Prize has been awarded in two-year intervals since 2005. German ex-president Richard von Weizsacker, former German chancellor Angela Merkel, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and Romanian President Klaus Johannis are all laureates.
