On Sunday, Slovakia will mark 55 years since the Warsaw Pact troops invasion of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic which began on the night of 20-21 August 1968. The event led to a halt in the country’s democratisation process. In November 2020, Slovak MPs added 21 August to the list of commemorative days as the Day of the Victims of the Occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968. The list of commemorative days was also extended to include 21 June as the Day of the withdrawal of the occupying Soviet troops from Czechoslovakia in 1991. These two days mark 23 years of occupation. The invasion of Czechoslovakia was the largest armed action in Europe since the end of the Second World War.
