Police chief Stefan Hamran (on the photo) has rejected claims by politicians that the police are acting at the behest of President Zuzana Caputova. He made the comments at a press conference on the Ezekiel 7 case on Monday (14 August). The case concerns the arrest of former police chief Tibor Gaspar and former NAKA investigator Roman Stahl. Norbert Bodor, a businessman from Nitra, is also facing charges.
Hamran called on political entities not to involve the police in the election campaign. He reminded them that the accused can also present evidence in their favour and that the investigators have to document it.
Hamran reported that the police had found evidence, namely a recording, that former police officer Roman S. had knowledge of witness tampering. According to what the ex-police officer said on the recording, a certain witness was offered two options by the police: either he cooperates and is rewarded financially, or he's discredited. According to Hamran, the fact that the Ezekiel 7 case was not manipulated has been confirmed by court rulings.
The Specialised Criminal Court ruled that the charges in the case were justified. Both Tibor Gaspar and Roman Stahl were arrested on Friday 11 August and charged with corruption as part of the National Crime Agency's Operation Ezekiel 7. A court has decided in the meantime that they'll be prosecuted at large.
