New rail services coming to Košice

The city of Košice in eastern Slovakia is the latest focus of Czech railway operators. Leo Express, RegioJet as well as the Czech state-run passenger railway transport operator České dráhy have announced that a number of trains running between Prague and the Ostrava region will be extended to the east of Slovakia.

“We are holding talks with the Slovak railway company that starting from December we would go to Košice with our Pendolino [tilt train],” head of České dráhy Daniel Kurucz told the Czech business daily Hospodárske Noviny. This increase in rail service coincides with a dramatic increase in passenger numbers travelling through Košice airport. The first half of 2014 saw 124,049 passengers at the airport, representing an annual increase of 49% to the same period in 2013.
