On Tuesday, Britain imposed sanctions on individuals and entities from Iran, Turkey, Dubai, Switzerland and Slovakia that support the Russian defense industry. Ashot Mkrtyčev, a citizen of the Slovak Republic, was among them according to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia. A total of 22 entities operating outside of Russia and another three Russian companies that, according to Britain, support Russia's activities in Ukraine were added to the sanctions list.
In March, the United States placed Mkrtychev on its sanctions list for attempting to mediate arms sales from North Korea to Russia. According to the US Treasury Department, in late 2022 and early 2023, he cooperated with DPRK officials and obtained more than two dozen types of weapons and ammunition. He planned to deliver them to Russia in exchange for "commercial aircraft, raw materials and other goods". By being placed on the US sanctions list, Mkrtychev was cut off from the financial system of the United States, the spokesman for the US National Security Council, John Kirby, said at the time.
