Retail revenues down in June

Retail revenues in Slovakia failed to reach last year's level in June, while dropping for the fifth month in a row, the Statistics Office reported on Friday. However, they fell by a lower margin than in previous months, going down by 5.1 percent year-on-year (y-o-y).

The overall result in June was most significantly influenced by a 6-percent decline in the sales of hypermarkets and supermarkets (non-specialised outlets), which make up the biggest share of overall retail revenues. The revenues of outlets selling household goods, such as hobby markets, furniture and consumer electronic stores, fell by 14 percent, thereby having the second most important impact.

Double digit drops in revenues was also reported by specialised outlets selling food, beverages and tobacco and by entities without outlets, i.e. kiosks, e-shops and markets.

Meanwhile, outlets selling fuel continued to report growth in revenues - of more than one third in June. "The revenues of specialised outlets selling computers rose by 15.2 percent, while those of outlets selling goods for culture and recreation, such as bookstores, sports shops and toy stores, swelled by 4.5 percent," added the Statistics Office.

Revenues of accommodation facilities rose by 14.3 percent y-o-y, while those of pubs and restaurants went up by 10.5 percent.

In monthly terms, revenues increased in almost all components of the retail sector, with those in accommodation growing the most (by over 15 percent).

In the first half of this year, revenues in the sale and repair of motor vehicles were 16.6 percent higher than the year before, while those of pubs and restaurants rose by 13.7 percent and revenues in accommodation grew by more than one third.
