One in five Slovaks is not affiliated with any religion or church, according to a survey done by the Sociology Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The figure is higher than the 13.4 percent concluded by official statistics.
“Our survey was more precise as we managed to lower the share of those who said they do not know their faith or were not identified”, said sociologist Miroslav Tižik, one of the survey’s authors. About 61 percent of believers identify as Roman Catholics. The survey also showed that almost half of Slovaks would like to see churches financed via funds from their own members, not via the state budget.
