Special police units will get new automatic weapons

The Interior Ministry plans to buy about 430 automatic rifles for officers serving in special police units. The department is preparing a public tender for about €900,000, according to a preliminary notice, published in the Public Procurement Journal.

The Interior Ministry wants to replace the current model 58 assault rifle for standard police automatic weapons with less lethal effects as the role of the police is not to kill but to stop and deliver the perpetrator to justice. The Interior Ministry also plans later this year to launch a tender for pistols. The goal is the replacement of all pistols in the Police Corps. They will need to buy approximately 25,000 weapons.
