The total volume of cargo transport in Slovakia in May 2023 amounted to 19.8 million tonnes, which was a decrease of 13.2 percent year-on-year (y-o-y), the Statistics Office reported on Monday. Furthermore the y-o-y declines in the volume of transported cargo have been in place since July 2022.
The Statistics Office ascribed the overall decrease in cargo transport volumes to an 8-percent drop in road transport, which made up three quarters of total cargo transport. The volume of rail cargo transport fell for the second month in a row, going down by 7.1 percent y-o-y in May. Other transport posted a drop of 13.4 percent, but it was less significant in terms of the share of total transport.
High y-o-y growth in the number of transported passengers continued in May, with 60.4 million of them carried by all forms of public passenger transport, up almost 9.5 percent y-o-y. Road transport reported two-digit growth in May, chiefly thanks to the higher use of public city transport. A record number of 37.5 million passengers used public city transport in May, an increase of 28.1 percent y-o-y.
In the first five months of 2023, the volume of cargo transport shrank by 10.4 percent y-o-y, while the number of transported passengers was 17 percent higher than the year before.
