Interior Minister resigns

Ivan Šimko has resigned as Minister of the Interior. Prime Minister Ľudovít Ódor informed about this on Wednesday. According to him the reason for this was the loss of trust between Šimko and the police leadership.  "I am very sorry for the situation, both personally and professionally. I worked well with Mr. Šimko," he said.  "The trust between the minister and the general leadership of the police was so damaged that it was not possible to restore it," he added.

According to Ódor, the communicated opinions of the Minister of the Interior contradict what his government has committed to and what Slovakia needs. "Politicization of the police is inaccessible, it is not the way," he declared. At the same time, the Prime Minister assured the police and citizens that the police will continue to have their hands untied within the limits of the law.

Over the last few weeks, Šimko got into disputes with the police leadership, when they did not agree on some personnel issues and the resolution of sensitive cases. The culmination of the disputes was the mandated minister's statement to the police that "people with guns and handcuffs must not have their hands untied here."
