Ex-police officer found guilty of corruption

A judge of the Specialised Criminal Court (STS) in Pezinok (Bratislava region) on Tuesday found former head of operatives of the National Crime Agency (NAKA) Jan Kalavsky guilty of corruption and leaking police information.

The judge sentenced him to seven years in prison with a financial penalty amounting to €5,000. The verdict can still be appealed.

The defendant did not attend the trial in person, as he is currently in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he is seeking asylum. In the past, he denied all charges.

The Special Prosecutor's Office (USP) proposed that he should be sentenced to nine years in prison with a financial penalty of €5,000.

His lawyer Eva Misikova said that the charges pressed against Jan Kalavsky were unfounded and unlawful. She asked the court to acquit her client.

According to the indictment, between November 2019 and March 2021 Jan Kalavsky received cash and a mobile phone from Peter P., nicknamed Tiger, in return for providing NAKA information. In addition to other activities, he allegedly revealed to Peter P. investigative and operational actions planned against him and the Takacovci mafia group.
