Criminal prosecution launched against ex-policeman

Following Wednesday's armed standoff against ex-policeman Ján Antoška (31), police have begun a criminal prosecution case over charges of attempted murder, the illegal possession of firearms, and illegal arms sales, according to Žilina Police Spokesperson Jana Baloghová. During the 11-hour standoff on Wednesday (August 6) in Liptovský Mikuláš (Žilina region), Mr Antoška fired four shots at police officers with deadly intent.

One of the bullets, aimed at a policeman's vital organs, hit the edge of a shield, from where it ricocheted – striking and injuring another policeman. According to the police, Antoška was armed with two firearms and had 338 pieces of ammunition, of which he did not hold permits. The weapons were secured and sent for forensic examination. More than 50 officers took part in the police operation. Antoška, suspected of a series of armed robberies and thefts, barricaded himself in his parent's house to take his last stand.
