Border checks to be stricter due to Russian embargo

The Slovak Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry has toughened up food checks at the country's borders in the wake of the announcement of a Russian embargo on agricultural products from the countries that support sanctions against Moscow, ministry spokesperson Radka Kulaviaková stated on Thursday.

“The Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry has been monitoring the current situation very carefully. We're not in a position at the moment to predict the scope and length of potential sanctions by Russia on the European Union. We've made checks at the borders stricter with immediate effect so that [imported] food complies with all due norms in place in Slovakia”, said the spokesperson. Foreign press agencies have reported that as of Thursday, Russia has banned all imports of agricultural products from countries that have imposed sanctions targeted at Moscow, including EU-member countries, the USA, Norway, Canada and Australia, for one year. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced earlier on Thursday that the ban applies to imports of all fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and dairy products.
