President Zuzana Caputova held bilateral talks with Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Lithuania on Tuesday. At the meeting, the president praised the excellent and constructive relations between Bratislava and Ottawa, which, according to her, are based on common values. President noted that Slovakia and Canada are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic relations this year, expressing her appreciation for the fact that Canada will set up an embassy in Bratislava this year. In addition, she thanked Trudeau for providing assistance to Ukraine, explaining that Slovakia wants Europe to be a safe space.
Canada is home to more than 100,000 Slovaks, and the two countries cooperate in a number of areas; in particular in the automobile industry, the president noted. In her opinion, there are opportunities for deepening cooperation in other fields, such as the green transition, for instance.
Trudeau thanked Slovakia for its support for Ukraine. Canada, he said, is preparing to open an embassy in Bratislava to deepen further its relations and friendship with Slovakia. He also praised cooperation with Slovakia within NATO.
