Slovakia failed to halve the volume of bio-waste that ends up in landfill sites between 1995 and 2013 in a commitment arising from the EU's landfill directive. The average Slovak produces some 300 kilos of waste in landfills, with biodegradable waste accounting for around one half of the total.
Up to three-fourths of municipal waste ends in landfill sites. Environment Ministry Senior Advisor Maros Zahorsky believes that “several significant changes have been proposed that should aid in cutting the biodegradable waste that ends up landfill sites”, hoping to fulfil the third objective for Slovakia, which is to squeeze the amount to 35 percent by 2020. The ministry has drafted a brand new Act on Waste that has already passed through inter-ministerial comments.
