Ex-policeman arrested after 11-hour standoff

Following an 11-hour standoff, a police unit of more than 50 members managed to apprehend an armed ex-police officer at 5 a.m. on Wednesday who is accused of a series of robberies. Barricading himself inside his parents' house in Liptovský Mikuláš (Žilina region), the man didn't hesitate to use his handgun against officers repeatedly.

The man was accused of eight armed robberies and two thefts. After the intervention he was successfully disarmed and suffered non-fatal injuries in the process, stated the Police Corps Vice-president Milan Lučanský. The police approached the whole raid with the highest degree of safety as they had evidence that the man possessed pyrotechnic equipment which could have potentially caused extensive damage, added the police vice-president.
