Cargo transport down by almost 11 percent in April

The total volume of cargo transport in Slovakia in April 2023 amounted to 18.5 million tonnes, which is a decrease of 10.9 percent year-on-year (y-o-y), the Statistics Office reported. Furthermore, the y-o-y decline in the volume of transported cargo continued for the tenth month in a row. The Statistics Office ascribed the overall decrease in cargo transport volumes to a 40-percent drop in other transport. However, this kind of transport was less significant in terms of its share of total transport. Road transport, which has been making up more than two-thirds of transported cargo for a long time, fell by 4 percent y-o-y. Following two months of growth, the volume of rail cargo transport went down by 10 percent.

High y-o-y growth in the number of transported passengers continued in April, with 55.6 million of them carried by all forms of public passenger transport, up almost 11 percent y-o-y. All kinds of passenger transport reported a growth in April, with the number of passengers in public city transport rising by 16 percent. Passenger rail transport went up by 4.7 percent, however, it only made up some 10 percent of the total number of passengers.

In the first four months of 2023, the volume of cargo transport shrank by 10 percent y-o-y, while the number of transported passengers was 20 percent higher than a year ago.
