The number of visitors to accommodation facilities in Slovakia grew almost one third year-on-year (y-o-y) to reach 400,000 in April 2023, the Statistics Office reported on Monday. Guests spent almost 1 million nights in tourism facilities, which was one quarter more than a year ago. The average length of stay was 2.4 night. The Statistics Office ascribed the increase in accommodation indicators to the low comparison base in April 2022, when tourist accommodation facilities were affected by the coronavirus pandemic and related measures. However, the current figure is only 10 percent (43,000 guests) below the one seen in April 2019.
Two thirds of the visitors to hotels, boarding houses and other accommodation facilities were domestic clients, with their number reaching 248,000. Zilina, Presov and Bratislava regions reported the highest levels of local visitors. These three regions hosted two thirds of the total number of the domestic clients.
Accommodation services in Slovakia were also used by 151,000 foreign guests in April, up 56 percent from the year before. The number of foreign clientele posted y-o-y growth in all regions of Slovakia, with Bratislava region showing the highest growth (by two thirds).
In the first four months of this year, meanwhile, 1.6 million people were accommodated in tourism facilities in Slovakia, up 1.5 times y-o-y. The figure was only 8 percent lower than in January-April 2019. The number of foreign tourists almost doubled y-o-y, while the number of domestic clients grew by 1.4 times.
