The government officially recognised the Vietnamese community in Slovakia as the 14th national minority in the country. The decision based on a recommendation of the Slovak Government Council for Human Rights, National Minorities and Gender Equality, which advised the recognition based on an expert opinion of the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The authors of the opinion acknowledged the legitimacy and relevance of the Vietnamese community's request to be recognised as a national minority. According to the data from the 2021 census, 2,793 people claimed to be Vietnamese, 489 individuals to be partially Vietnamese having multiple nationalities.
