Illegal shipment of 67 puppies intercepted at borders over weekend

Two illegal shipments of 67 puppies were intercepted at Slovakia's borders with Hungary and the Czech Republic this past weekend. The puppies, of various breeds, were most probably meant to be sold abroad. They are now in a temporary quarantine facility in Bratislava.

According to the inspector Romana Březinová from the non-governmental organization Freedom of Animals, police specialists along with the State Veterinary and Food Administration conducted checks of three vehicles with shipments of dogs. While everything was in order with one of the exports, the other two turned out to be illegal. According to Březinová, the exporters failed to meet several requirements. "The dogs didn't have microchips, they had neither pet passports nor TRACES protocols, and they were younger than three months," said Březinová.
