Caretaker Education Minister Daniel Butora has announced that his ministry has greenlighted a new national education programme. The new curriculum will first be implemented at 40 primary schools, starting this September. It will become mandatory for all primary schools as of the 2026/27 academic year. With the approval of the new curriculum, Slovakia has reached an important milestone of the national recovery plan. "Slovak pupils have long achieved below-average results in OECD PISA tests in reading literacy and science, and slightly worse results in mathematics. The curriculum reform is among the key tools of the Recovery Plan that have the potential to reverse this trend and better prepare children for the future," said Peter Golias, head of the education, innovation and public finance department at the National Implementation and Coordination Authority. The new curriculum and teaching methods will be introduced at schools gradually. Based on feedback from teachers in the pilot schools, methodological materials will be developed to support other primary schools.
