Archbishop Emeritus of Kosice Alojz Tkac has died at the age of 89, Kosice Archdiocese confirmed for TASR on Tuesday. Tkac was persecuted under the communist regime in the former Czechoslovakia. In 1975, he was deprived of his state permission to serve as a priest, which forced him to earn his living as a tram driver and forestry worker until 1983. Subsequently, he became a parish priest in the Presov region. Tkac took on the mantle of Kosice Archbishop in 1995, receiving his pallium from Pope John Paul II.
