Cruising through the Gabčíkovo dam complex on the Danube River has been stopped due to a suspected disorder of the upper return lock. This was explained to the TASR news agency by the Water Management spokesperson Diana Migaľová. “During a routine inspection engineers found that one in four bearings that hold the upper gates, is faulty.
Passage through a lock had to be stopped immediately in order to rectify the fault. Otherwise it could threaten the operation of the disposal chamber for a much longer time”, said Migaľová. A team of technical divers are troubleshooting the bearings at present with an expected repair date scheduled for Saturday (02.08). However, if the conditions are optimal, the lock may be repaired sooner, with access for ships commencing on Thursday (31.7), confirmed the spokesperson. Due to the nature of the repair work, it is currently not possible to offer navigation through the spare lock.
