Towns and villages plagued by energy prices, expecting new cabinet to help

The soaring energy prices that have complicated life for towns and villages might force them to restrict some services in the spheres of social affairs, culture, sport and transport to a certain extent, as the compensation payments provided to local administrations have failed to offset their losses. The Slovak Towns and Villages Association warned regarding this at a press conference on Wednesday. The association’s chair and mayor of Liptovsky Hradok Branislav Treger added that the incoming caretaker cabinet will need to address the issue sooner rather than later. Outgoing Prime Minister Eduard Heger said on Wednesday that the local authorities would be given the remaining money. "By making the change of reducing the distribution fees to the level of 2022, we significantly helped local authorities to reduce their invoices," said Heger, adding that additional money in the amount of about €108 million will be paid to the municipalities in the first and second half of the year, according to the key that was agreed upon.
