Belonging to the European community means protection and prospects for Slovakia and for each of its inhabitants, President Zuzana Caputova posted on a social network on Tuesday.
"The European integration project was created as a peace initiative with the intention that our continent is not condemned to mutual conflicts and disputes, and that Europe becomes a territory of peaceful coexistence, economically advantageous cooperation, free trade and free movement of people, and above all freedom, democracy and respect for human rights," wrote the head of state.
According to her, the past 73 years confirm that cooperation is the only alternative for Europe, pointing out that diversity and variety is the principle of Europe today. "The common value base and emphasis on human freedoms and rights is the source of its strength and energy. This makes it resistant to nationalism and violent ideologies," added the president.
Residents of the European Union, including Slovakia, traditionally commemorate the birth of a united Europe on May 9 as part of Europe Day.
