Ukraine has again asked Slovakia to send an investigation team to document evidence of war crimes. This was announced by President Zuzana Caputova on Sunday (30 April) after her return from Ukraine. She recalled that Slovakia, together with France, was the first country to offer its experts. Their interest was immediate and unhesitating, she said, adding that the interest of the experts is still there.
The President admitted that Slovakia is lagging behind the Czech Republic in preparing concrete projects to help with the reconstruction of Ukraine. The head of state sees the reconstruction as an opportunity for Slovak companies and entrepreneurs to establish themselves. "The government has identified a group of companies that are interested in doing business in Ukraine. The government is finalising a support programme that should facilitate this assistance and cooperation," the president said. According to the President, cooperation in demining is a perspective area of possible assistance to Ukraine. "Slovakia has great technologies and we are world leaders in this field," she said.
However, she first wants to discuss the specific form of assistance with Prime Minister Eduard Heger and Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad. Ukraine is currently one of the worst affected countries in terms of mine contamination. "Ukraine's landmines are a huge problem. Simply put, one day of war means the need for 30 days of demining," Caputova noted. At the same time, she strongly rejects making light of the situation in Ukraine. She said the people who question what is happening in Ukraine should go there and look the suffering people in the eye.
