Up to 45% of teachers have not yet used artificial intelligence

Up to 45% of teachers have never used artificial intelligence (AI) tools and 26% have used them out of curiosity to see how they work. The data comes from a survey conducted by the Faculty of Mass Media Communication at the University of Cyril and Methodius (UCM) in Trnava among a sample of 474 students and 87 secondary school teachers. TASR was informed of the results by Peter Krajcovic of the UCM FMK. Almost 63 percent of the teachers said that they knew the concept of artificial intelligence very well and had a fairly good idea about it. "Almost 30 percent said that they had heard of artificial intelligence, but they were not quite sure what it meant. In terms of using AI, teachers most often said that they have used it to prepare materials for teaching, assignments or tests for students, or to get input for teaching, or to use AI tools in education," Krajcovic said. Nearly 77 percent of teachers believe that AI poses both benefits and risks, depending on how it is used by students. About 17 percent of teachers think it poses a risk to students, because students stop thinking and working independently. More than half of teachers said they had not yet encountered students using artificial intelligence.  Some 27 per cent said they had encountered students using AI for homework. "More than a third were concerned that they wouldn't be able to tell whether the task was done by AI or the student, and about the same number said they couldn't tell," Krajcovic added.
