The President will not respond to Matovič's proposal

President Zuzana Caputova won't react to OLANO leader Igor Matovic's proposal to reduce the salaries of MPs and the President. Her spokesman Martin Strizinec has told TASR that Caputova already in September 2022 asked Premier Eduard Heger to consider reducing her salary when preparing the state budget. "The president won't respond to media calls by MPs and won't engage in party campaigning to support various last-minute MP proposals," said Strizinec.

The president commented on her salary last September in a letter to Premier Heger, in which she asked him to consider reducing her presidential salary, when preparing the state budget, by an amount that he finds to be 'suitable and adequate with regard to the current economic situation in the country'. "OLANO politicians thus had enough time to react to the president's proposal. The president needed no public calls or press conferences to do it," added her spokesman. Matovic held a news conference on Monday to claim that salaries of MPs and President Zuzana Caputova are rising by an extreme amount in 2023. Therefore, he wants to submit to the May House session a proposal that would reduce their salaries in the second half of the year so they earn the same sum as they did in 2022. He believes that the House will deal with his proposal, although it won't be submitted in accord with the Rules of Procedure. OLANO has called on MPs and the President to publicly support freezing of their salaries.
