Italian President Sergio Mattarella will visit Slovakia

Italian President Sergio Mattarella will arrive in Slovakia on Wednesday. His two-day program will begin at Malacky-Kuchyňa Air Base, which he will visit together with the President of the SR Zuzana Čaputová. On Thursday (April 20), the heads of state will hold a joint meeting in the Presidential Palace. TASR was informed about this by the president's spokesman Martin Strižinec.

"In addition to bilateral cooperation, the heads of state will mainly discuss cooperation within the European Union, including the fight against disinformation and issues of the rule of law, migration, as well as solutions to the energy crisis and the situation in our region in connection with the war in Ukraine," outlined the spokesperson. He added that the last visit of the Italian president took place 12 years ago.

The Kuchyňa military base will be visited by the presidents, as the Italian air defense system is located there. It is also the workplace of Italian soldiers within the alliance presence in Slovakia. Mattarella will also lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on the Danube embankment in Bratislava. During the visit, the Presidential Palace will also announce the signing of three memoranda of understanding between representatives of the Slovak gas industry and Italian energy companies in the area of diversification of gas supplies.
